Funchal Welcomes National Geographic Endurance
Today, the picturesque bay of Funchal greeted the National Geographic Endurance, marking a significant event in the region's maritime activities. Arriving from Agadir, Morocco, the vessel brought along 147 passengers and a crew of 105, showcasing its unique design tailored for polar navigation. The ship docked at approximately 6:15 AM and is scheduled to depart at 6:00 PM, continuing its journey to Santa Cruz de La Palma in the Canary Islands.
This voyage is part of the National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions, which specializes in expedition cruising that merges tourism with scientific exploration. Passengers are accompanied by experts, including biologists, historians, and photographers, enriching their travel experience with valuable insights into the regions they visit.
The journey commenced last Thursday in Lisbon, making stops in Portimão and Morocco's Casablanca and Agadir before reaching the stunning Madeira archipelago. Following its stay in Funchal, the ship will navigate through the Canary Islands, including La Palma and Tenerife, and onward to Cape Verde, visiting the islands of Fogo and Santiago. This remarkable expedition will conclude on October 20 in Dakar, the capital of Senegal.
Notably, this is the third visit of the Endurance to Madeira, but only the second occasion it has docked in the city’s port. Previously, in October 2021, it made a technical stop three miles offshore, and in April 2024, it marked its inaugural call at Funchal.
Looking ahead, Funchal's port is set to welcome two additional ships on Wednesday: the Celebrity Apex and the Spirit of Adventure, further enhancing the region's appeal as a prominent maritime destination.
