GeeSpace Expands Satellite Initiatives in Algeria
GeeSpace, the satellite technology arm of China’s Geely Holding Group, is making significant strides in North Africa through the establishment of new partnerships in Algeria and Morocco. These collaborations are primarily directed at enhancing low-Earth orbit satellite capabilities and advancing digital infrastructure across these nations. In December 2025, the company entered into cooperative agreements with local partners in Algeria, focusing on the development of satellite-based Internet of Things (IoT) services, satellite manufacturing, and broader technological collaboration.
One pivotal agreement was forged with Algérien Télécom Satellite, where the director-general, Toufik Hentabli, and GeeSpace CEO, Wang Yang, committed to collaborating on the creation of a commercial and operational framework for a groundbreaking satellite IoT investment project in Algeria. This initiative is poised to be rolled out in phases and holds the potential to expand into other African markets as it matures.
The partnership is in alignment with Algeria’s national strategy aimed at accelerating digital transformation by enhancing connectivity and bolstering various sectors, including industry, agriculture, and logistics, through the implementation of satellite-enabled technologies. Furthermore, GeeSpace has also entered into a separate cooperation agreement with the Algeria Space Agency, which is designed to fortify collaboration in the production of low-Earth orbit satellites and to expand technical expertise within the country.
Officials have indicated that this partnership could pave the way for the establishment of satellite manufacturing facilities and a dedicated research and applications center, ultimately contributing to the development of a domestic aerospace ecosystem and enhancing local engineering capabilities. These agreements are integral to Algeria’s wider initiative to strengthen its national space sector, reduce dependence on foreign satellite systems, and facilitate the introduction of new services in telecommunications, infrastructure monitoring, and logistics.
GeeSpace's Cooperation with Morocco's Soremar Group
In Morocco, GeeSpace has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Casablanca-based Soremar Group, aiming to support the deployment of its GEESATCOM satellite communications services. This agreement emphasizes the commercialization of GeeSpace’s low-Earth orbit satellite network and the expansion of its applications throughout Morocco and the broader North African region. Soremar, which operates in maritime and satellite communications, is expected to lend its market expertise and operational support to the project.
Both entities are set to collaborate on testing satellite constellations, expanding market reach, and developing applications for various sectors, including transportation, energy, and agriculture, as Morocco continues its initiatives to bolster its digital economy. This strategic partnership is indicative of the growing importance of satellite technology in enhancing connectivity and fostering economic development across North Africa.
