German Media Reports Feasibility Study on Morocco-Spain Tunnel Project

Feasibility of the Morocco-Spain Undersea Tunnel Project Confirmed

Recent reports from German media have revealed promising news regarding the ambitious undersea tunnel project linking Morocco and Spain through the Strait of Gibraltar. According to a feasibility study conducted by a specialized tunneling company in 2025, the project is technically viable despite the significant challenges it faces. This monumental project aims to enhance direct connectivity between the African and European continents via a railway network, marking it as one of the most strategic undertakings anticipated in the near future.

The German magazine "Tourenfahrer" reported that the study concluded the project's technical aspects are achievable, noting that the commencement of construction will depend on securing the necessary funding, estimated to be between €15 billion and €20 billion, with a projected timeline extending to at least 2035. This undersea tunnel is expected to span approximately 40 kilometers, linking the Punta Paloma area in southern Spain with the Malabata region in northern Morocco, at depths reaching up to 475 meters below sea level.

Additionally, the project plans to construct two parallel tunnels dedicated to the transit of passengers and goods, which would significantly reduce travel time to around 30 minutes, a stark contrast to the current maritime transport duration exceeding one hour. While the project's potential is promising, it does come with complex technical challenges, including unstable geological conditions in certain areas of the strait, seismic activity, and high maritime traffic density. Nevertheless, experts believe that establishing this continental link could substantially transform transportation and trade dynamics, solidifying Morocco's position as a strategic hub between Europe and Africa.
