German Films Shine Bright in Upcoming Oscars
Despite the disappointment of losing the film "In die Sonne schauen" from the race for the Best International Feature category at the 2026 Oscars, the German film industry remains optimistic about its prospects. The upcoming gala, scheduled for March 15, 2026, could still turn into a celebratory event for German cinema, as three notable productions continue to vie for the prestigious gold statuettes.
Leading the charge is the poignant drama "Sentimental Value," directed by Joachim Trier. This film boasts a star-studded cast, including renowned actors Stellan Skarsgård and Elle Fanning. It is a product of international collaboration, involving German company Komplizen Film alongside ZDF and Arte. With its compelling narrative, the film has garnered nominations across an impressive nine Oscar categories, making it a strong contender.
The film tells a heart-wrenching story of two sisters, Nora and Agnes, who are faced with the daunting task of clearing out their deceased mother's home. Their emotional journey takes an unexpected turn when their estranged father, Gustav, a film director, reappears with a surprising proposition: he wants Nora to star in a film based on his life.
Also making waves in the Oscar circuit is the road movie "Sirāt." While primarily a Spanish-French production, it has benefitted from the involvement of ZDF and Arte as partners. The gripping plot follows Luis and his 12-year-old son Esteban as they traverse Morocco in search of Luis's daughter, who has mysteriously vanished during a rave event. As the police break up the party, they embark on a perilous journey through the Atlas Mountains in pursuit of answers.
In the Best Documentary Feature category, "Ein Nobody gegen Putin" is set to make its mark. This documentary is a collaborative effort between Denmark, the Czech Republic, and Germany, with support from ZDF and Arte. It chronicles the story of a Russian teacher who, initially organizing patriotic events at his school, begins to critically examine the political landscape of his homeland. Notably, the film is currently available for free viewing on the Arte Mediathek and YouTube, making it accessible to a wider audience.
In addition to these international co-productions featuring ZDF and Arte, several German filmmakers are also in the running for nominations at the 2026 Oscars. Thus, the chances for German contributions at the 98th Academy Awards remain promising, albeit indirectly. The excitement builds as the grand event approaches, set to take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, hosted by American comedian Conan O’Brien. Fans in Germany can catch the spectacle live on ProSieben or stream it via Joyn on the night of March 16.
