Germany has recently reiterated its commitment to the principle of autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty concerning the ongoing Sahara issue, signaling its intent to align its diplomatic and economic actions with this important stance. This reaffirmation was articulated in a joint declaration that emerged from the conclusion of the second session of the Morocco-Germany Multidimensional Strategic Dialogue, which took place in Rabat on Thursday.
During this significant meeting, Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, engaged in discussions with his German counterpart, Johann Wadephul. A notable highlight of the dialogue was Germany’s endorsement of Resolution 2797, which was passed by the UN Security Council on October 31, 2025. This resolution underscored that "genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could represent the most feasible solution" to the regional dispute surrounding the Moroccan Sahara.
In addition to its recognition of the UN resolution, Germany reaffirmed the importance of the Autonomy Initiative proposed by the Kingdom of Morocco. The German government regards the autonomy plan as a "serious and credible basis for negotiations" aimed at achieving a fair, enduring, and mutually agreeable resolution to this regional conflict. Furthermore, Germany expressed its unwavering support for the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy in facilitating and conducting negotiations that are grounded in the Moroccan autonomy plan. The joint declaration also noted Morocco’s readiness to clarify how autonomy under its sovereignty would be structured.
In light of these developments, Germany has committed itself to act in accordance with this position on both diplomatic and economic fronts, emphasizing its adherence to international law in the process.
