RABAT (MOROCCO) (ITALPRESS) – Germany has reiterated its support for the concept of autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty concerning the ongoing Sahara issue, emphasizing that it will align its diplomatic and economic actions with this stance. This reaffirmation was reported by the Moroccan news agency MAP, which highlighted that this position was outlined in a joint declaration following the second session of the Morocco-Germany Multidimensional Strategic Dialogue. This significant meeting took place in Rabat and involved Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and his German counterpart, Johann Wadephul.
According to MAP, Germany expressed its approval of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, adopted on October 31, 2025. The resolution indicated that “genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could represent the most viable solution” to the regional dispute concerning Western Sahara. Germany emphasized the importance of the autonomy initiative proposed by the Kingdom of Morocco and further proclaimed that it views the Moroccan autonomy plan as “a serious and credible basis for negotiations” aimed at achieving a fair, lasting, and mutually acceptable resolution to the conflict.
In addition, Germany reiterated its unwavering support for the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy in facilitating and steering the political process based on the Moroccan autonomy plan. The joint statement also noted Germany's appreciation for Morocco’s readiness to “clarify the form that autonomy would take under Moroccan sovereignty.” Furthermore, Germany committed itself to “acting in accordance with this position diplomatically and economically,” while ensuring compliance with international law, as concluded by the report from the MAP agency.
