Survey Reveals Mixed Perception of Germany in Arab Countries

A recent representative survey conducted by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) highlights an intriguing dichotomy in how Germany is perceived across various Arab nations. The results reveal that Germany enjoys a relatively favorable reputation, particularly in Syria, where an impressive 73% of respondents view the country positively. The latter is viewed critically but not as the main aggressor. The survey indicates a clear divide regarding Germany's influence; while it is often considered likable, it is seldom recognized as a significant player in regional geopolitics. This aligns with broader sentiments regarding Europe, where EU countries are also favorably regarded yet perceived as lacking substantial influence.

Germany's Regional Standing Compared to Other Powers

The survey further illustrates a complex landscape where Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey are identified as the major players in the region, overshadowing Germany's political clout. Conducted between May 8 and July 3, 2026, the survey encompassed responses from 8,475 individuals across Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and the Palestinian territories. Participants were asked about their political views, economic expectations, and opinions on both regional and international matters, providing a comprehensive understanding of the prevailing attitudes. Overall, while Germany is viewed positively, this affection does not translate into perceived influence, emphasizing a need for a reevaluation of its diplomatic strategies in the Middle East.
