Ghana and Morocco Forge Stronger Economic Partnership
In a significant move to enhance bilateral relations, Ghana and Morocco have officially signed eleven cooperation agreements aimed at bolstering their economic partnership and stimulating trade between the two nations. This announcement was made public by the Ghanaian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on July 23, 2026. Both countries are keen to leverage their strategic positions to deepen economic cooperation and promote trade, with Ghana serving as the headquarters of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat, while Morocco aspires to strengthen its role as a gateway between Africa, Europe, and the Mediterranean.
The newly signed agreements encompass a range of areas, including air services and mutual administrative assistance in customs matters. Additionally, the two nations have established memorandums of understanding (MoUs) that focus on standardization, compliance assessment, and metrology. They also plan to collaborate in higher education, science, and technology, while promoting joint initiatives in meteorology and climatology.
A scientific and technical cooperation protocol has been signed between the National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines of Morocco, the Minerals Commission, and the Geological Authority of Ghana. Other agreements address areas such as diplomatic and professional training, scholarship provisions, internships, expertise sharing, as well as initiatives in sports and archives.
This partnership was solidified during the second session of the Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation held in Rabat from June 9 to 11, 2026, where technical experts reviewed the state of bilateral cooperation and prepared the eleven agreements for ministerial consideration.
In light of the current global economic uncertainties, Ghana's Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, emphasized the necessity of reinforced African cooperation. He highlighted Morocco's strategic position as a pivotal entry point to Europe and the Mediterranean, combined with Ghana's role in the AfCFTA, which presents vast opportunities for increasing intra-African trade, strengthening regional value chains, attracting investments, and advancing the aspirations of the African Union's Agenda 2063.
With trade exchanges estimated at $285.99 million, as per the Observatory of Economic Complexity (OEC), Ghana aims to learn from Morocco’s experience in renewable energy and to collaborate in vaccine production and pharmaceuticals, thereby enhancing the continent's health sovereignty. Meanwhile, Morocco continues to advance its cooperation with Ghana and other West African countries across various strategic sectors, reinforcing its status as a key partner in regional integration.
