Ghana Shines in Women's AFCON Debut Against Cape Verde
The opening matches of the group stage for the Women's Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2026 took place on June 29, 2026, at the Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca. Ghana emerged victorious with a 2-0 win against Cape Verde, while Cameroon secured a 2-1 victory over Mali.
In what marked a significant milestone for Cape Verdean women's football, the national team made its debut in the final round of the AFCON. Unfortunately for them, the match ended in disappointment as they fell to a Ghanaian side that had previously finished third in the last edition of the tournament. Ghana wasted no time in showcasing their ambitions as they opened the scoring just six minutes into the game, courtesy of Doris Boaduwaa. The Ghanaians extended their lead early in the second half when Boaduwaa turned provider, assisting Vieira Eleia for the second goal at the 53rd minute. Doris Boaduwaa’s outstanding performance earned her the title of Woman of the Match.
Cameroon Dominates Against Mali
Returning to the Women's AFCON, Cameroon did not disappoint in their group stage opener against Mali at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca. The Indomitable Lionesses showcased their prowess with a convincing 2-1 win. Young striker Marie Ngah Manga was the star of the match, scoring both goals for Cameroon at the 14th and 73rd minutes. Although Mali managed to equalize in the 30th minute through Aissata Traoré, it was Ngah's penalty that ultimately secured the win and restored Cameroon’s lead. This strong performance sets a positive tone for Cameroon as they continue their campaign in the tournament.
