GITEX Africa 2026: A Transformational Gathering for Innovation

The fourth edition of GITEX Africa, taking place from April 7 to 9 in Marrakech, has drawn an impressive lineup of over 700 startups and 400 investors from more than 35 countries. This year's theme, "Creating a Global Future for Digital Africa," underscores the event's commitment to fostering innovation and collaboration across the continent. With expectations of attracting over 55,000 attendees and featuring more than 1,400 exhibitors from 130 countries, GITEX Africa 2026 stands as its largest iteration to date, showcasing the increasing global interest in Africa's burgeoning technology landscape.

Under the auspices of the Ministry of Digital Transition and Administration Reform and organized by KAOUN International in partnership with the Digital Development Agency (ADD), GITEX Africa serves as a pivotal platform for connecting startups with investors. Collectively, the participating investors manage assets worth over $200 billion, with an astonishing 24% of them attending for the first time. This growing interest reflects a burgeoning confidence in the African innovation ecosystem, especially as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) opens up a market valued at a staggering $3.4 trillion.

Opportunities for Growth and Investment in African Startups

This year, North Star Africa has witnessed a remarkable 30% increase in the number of participating startups compared to the previous year. Notably, this edition has attracted unprecedented participation from sovereign wealth funds, pension funds, and development finance institutions, highlighting the increasing recognition of Africa's potential. In 2025 alone, African tech startups raised a total of $4.1 billion, marking a 25% increase year-on-year. North Star Africa plays a crucial role in connecting these startups with investors who are responsible for over 80% of all funding directed towards African startups.

Among the notable investors present are Taiyo Holding, Shell Foundation, Small Foundation, and Oryx Impact. Sebastian Waldburg, a founding partner at Oryx Impact, emphasized the duality of challenges and opportunities in Africa, encouraging more investors to engage with the continent's tech scene. "I invite people to look at Africa, invest in Africa, and bring more capital into technology, innovation, SMEs, and infrastructure across the continent," he stated, pointing out Morocco's emerging reputation as a hub for innovative startups.

Delegations from various African nations and international markets have made their presence felt at GITEX Africa 2026. Tunisia, for instance, brought over 40 sustainable tech startups, while Côte d'Ivoire introduced a delegation of 45 officials, marking their inaugural participation. France made a significant impact with its largest-ever government-supported startup pavilion. Senegal has also notably enhanced its presence, with its delegation led by the ICT Ministry showcasing nearly double the number of startups compared to previous years.

This year’s event also marks the debut of eleven countries, including Andorra, Croatia, and Hong Kong, indicating a growing recognition of the importance of African markets in the global tech landscape. Virginie Royer, director of major projects at Numéum, a French digital sector body, noted the critical need for stronger connections between Europe and Africa. She expressed admiration for the advancements in Morocco and Africa's digital sectors, further solidifying the narrative that collaboration is key to mutual growth.

At the heart of the North Star Africa program is the Morocco 300 initiative, which saw a 50% expansion this year. This initiative showcases 300 high-potential startups from 32 cities across Morocco, covering diverse sectors. Examples include Ondwear, an AI-driven fashion platform, and IZEMX, a company focused on digital transformation through technologies like AI and blockchain. Additionally, regional startups such as Tunisia's AuroraIQ and Senegal's LafricaMobile are leveraging GITEX as a platform to enhance partnerships and extend their reach across the continent.

Moreover, Nigeria is utilizing this opportunity to promote its digital investment strategy, with Kashifu Abdullahi, director general of NITDA, discussing the country's 3 Million Talent initiative aimed at boosting capacity across critical digital sectors. Abdullahi highlighted the importance of national cyber resilience, emphasizing the need for skilled professionals to protect digital infrastructures and contribute to the economy.
