GITEX Africa 2026: Showcasing Innovation and Opportunity
The fourth edition of GITEX Africa has officially commenced in Marrakech, Morocco, marking a significant gathering of over 1,450 exhibitors and startups hailing from more than 145 nations. This event is heralded as the largest technology and digital economy expo on the African continent, underlining the message that Africa is not just a market for foreign investment, but a vibrant hub of innovation and creativity. The three-day event, which runs until April 9, is themed "Catalyzing Africa’s Digital Economy in the Age of Artificial Intelligence" and is organized by the Digital Development Agency (ADD) alongside KAOUN International, a division of the Dubai World Trade Centre, in collaboration with Morocco’s Ministry of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform.
During the opening ceremony, notable figures including Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch and various international dignitaries gathered to highlight the transformative progress in Morocco’s digital landscape. Akhannouch emphasized the government's strategic shift from isolated initiatives to a cohesive national strategy, which has seen a substantial increase in investment within the digital sector, soaring from MAD 11 million to over MAD 1.7 billion between 2021 and 2024. This growth reflects a qualitative leap in public policy aimed at fostering a robust digital economy.
Akhannouch also shared that Morocco has advanced 14 positions in the government AI readiness index for 2025 and is on track to achieve extensive 5G coverage, aiming for 45% by the close of 2026. The country has also made strides with over 1.4 million subscriptions to fiber-optic home internet and has secured its first major cloud hyperscaler investment, creating substantial employment opportunities.
The Expansive Scope of GITEX Africa
This year’s GITEX Africa is set to attract over 55,000 attendees, with an impressive lineup of more than 700 international speakers and approximately 400 investors managing assets exceeding $350 billion. The event has expanded significantly compared to previous editions, welcoming new countries such as Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Guinea, Hungary, Luxembourg, Thailand, and Zambia into its fold.
Spanning a diverse array of sectors including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, fintech, agritech, healthtech, data centers, smart cities, and future mobility, GITEX Africa is poised to spotlight innovations that address both local and global challenges. The notion of fostering sustainable development through digital innovation, particularly AI, has been a central theme, illustrating how technology can bolster infrastructure, enhance public policy, and accelerate the adoption of solutions tailored to the continent's unique context.
The event also features North Star Africa, the continent's largest startup showcase, with over 800 participating startups, supported by various initiatives aimed at fostering growth and facilitating access to funding. Additionally, the "Morocco 300" initiative aims to boost the involvement of local startups, significantly increasing participation from the previous year’s program.
With approximately 375 million young professionals expected to enter the African workforce by 2030, GITEX Africa serves as a critical bridge connecting this burgeoning talent pool to global capital, mentorship, and market opportunities, reinforcing its role as a pivotal platform for fostering digital innovation and economic growth across the continent.
