Gitex Africa 2026 Kicks Off in Marrakech: A Digital Transformation Milestone for the Continent

Gitex Africa 2026 Launches with Record Participation

The highly anticipated Gitex Africa 2026 commenced on April 7, 2026, in the vibrant city of Marrakech, Morocco. This year's event has witnessed an unprecedented turnout, attracting over 50,000 participants along with more than 1,450 exhibitors representing over 130 countries. Notably, Côte d'Ivoire has made a significant presence at this summit, bringing along officials, around thirty startups, and over 200 participants, showcasing the country's commitment to digital innovation.

The opening ceremony featured remarks from Aziz Akhannouch, the Prime Minister of Morocco, and included the participation of government officials from various African nations, both national and international investors, representatives from governmental institutions, and notable speakers from diverse backgrounds. The event is orchestrated by the Moroccan Ministry of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, in collaboration with the Digital Development Agency (Add) and Kaoun International, a subsidiary of the Dubai World Trade Centre. This year's theme, "Catalyzing Africa's Digital Economy in the Age of Artificial Intelligence," emphasizes the urgency of digital transformation across the continent.

Pioneering Pan-African Cooperation and Innovation

Gitex Africa 2026 is not just an exhibition; it serves as a pivotal platform for pan-African cooperation where global innovation converges with the continent's sovereignty challenges. The event aims to accelerate the deployment of impactful digital solutions that will lay the groundwork for Africa's future economic resilience. This year, the expo has introduced new sector-specific areas and enhanced existing hubs, aligning with the continent's most dynamic technological priorities.

Among the highlights are smart infrastructure for data centers designed to address the structural deficiencies that have hindered the growth of Africa's digital economy. Additionally, the fintech sector is spotlighted, showcasing mobile money solutions, AI-driven financial inclusion, and cross-border payments. The event also features a dedicated space for future mobility, focusing on electric, autonomous, and connected transport solutions, alongside a Sports Tech hub that emphasizes smart sports infrastructure, athlete performance optimization technologies, and innovative fan engagement formats.

Furthermore, Gitex Africa returns to emphasize cybersecurity with a dedicated program developed in partnership with Morocco's General Directorate for Information System Security (Dgssi). The Strategic Digital Defence AI Readiness (Star) summit will facilitate high-level discussions aimed at equipping businesses, industries, and emerging digital economies in Africa with the frameworks necessary to safeguard critical infrastructures against increasingly sophisticated AI-driven threats.

This year's Gitex Africa also celebrates transformative forces shaping the African tech industry. Approximately 60% of AI initiatives in Africa have transitioned from theoretical concepts to operational realities, showcasing rapid adoption of this technology. Global experts and academics will share their insights on the global AI economy, while international speakers from cybersecurity agencies, industry leaders, and pioneering startups will unveil strategies to combat cyber threats and protect vital data.

The event covers a wide array of sectors, from biotech and medical innovations to talent development and the emergence of Africa's first unicorn. It highlights the importance of collaboration among governments, industries, and innovative startups to ensure equitable and accessible healthcare. In fintech, innovation and inclusion are foundational, targeting a market potential of $1 trillion driven by fluid borders, green financing, and venture capital investment. With SMEs contributing nearly 50% of Africa’s GDP, fintech innovation opens vast growth prospects.

Gitex Africa is also set to transform education across the continent, equipping talents with the skills needed to thrive in the new global economy. Startups and tech leaders will present solutions aimed at bridging skill gaps, while sustainable development remains central to Africa's digital transformation, particularly in agritech and food security. Lastly, with urban growth projected to reach 60% by 2050, the future of urban planning is a focal point at Gitex Africa, where solution providers for digital cities and institutions will unveil upcoming innovations.
