GITEX Future Health Africa: Pioneering Healthcare Sovereignty on the Continent

Reimagining African Health: A Gathering of Innovation and Sovereignty

Marrakech is poised to become the epicenter of groundbreaking discussions as it hosts the inaugural GITEX Future Health Africa from May 4 to 6. This significant event, organized by KAOUN International in collaboration with Morocco’s Ministry of Health and Social Protection and the Mohammed VI Foundation for Sciences and Health (FM6SS), aims to unite key stakeholders in healthcare and technology. With over 300 exhibitors expected to participate, this summit comes at a crucial time when the conditions for systemic transformation within Africa's healthcare landscape are ripe for action, signaling the continent's transition towards a projected healthcare market valued at $259 billion by 2030.

The summit is not merely a trade event; it is a strategic gathering that brings together policymakers, technology leaders, and investors, aimed at fostering dialogue on essential issues such as financing, regulation, and universal health coverage. The event kicks off with an Executive Summit that will host ministers and approximately 50 international investors for focused discussions. Notable speakers, including former French Health Minister Agnès Buzyn and GIZ’s Jan Schwaab, underscore the summit's commitment to facilitating a dialogue that bridges North-South and South-South perspectives on health care.

Health Sovereignty: A Call for Structural Change

At the core of the discussions lies the urgent theme of health sovereignty, which advocates for Africa's right to design, produce, regulate, and govern its own health systems. This demand emerges from a recognition of the continent's historical positioning within global supply chains, where African nations often serve as sites of consumption rather than as producers. Currently, Africa bears approximately 17% of the global disease burden yet only employs about 3% of the world’s health workforce, highlighting a significant disparity that perpetuates dependency on external resources. The continent imports between 70% and 90% of its pharmaceuticals and has a local vaccine production capacity that meets less than 1% of its needs, resulting in a financial drain of over $65 billion annually on medical imports that could be manufactured locally.

The COVID-19 pandemic starkly illuminated these inequalities, as Africa received a mere 6% of global vaccine doses despite being home to a substantial share of the world's disease burden. In response to these challenges, the African Union has prioritized local pharmaceutical manufacturing as a continental security issue, advocating for mechanisms that promote sustainable financing and technology transfer. This initiative aims to diminish reliance on external pharmaceutical supply chains and reshape the narrative around African health governance.

Furthermore, Morocco is leading by example in this transformative journey. The nation is not only expanding compulsory health insurance and implementing a National Digital Health Card but also investing heavily in healthcare infrastructure. The establishment of the SENSYO Pharmatech facility, a $500 million public-private partnership aimed at becoming Africa's largest vaccine fill-and-finish platform, showcases Morocco's commitment to local vaccine production and health sovereignty. With the ambition to meet over 70% of its vaccine needs and more than 60% of the continent’s requirements, Morocco is setting a precedent for other African nations.

GITEX Future Health Africa serves as a critical platform for operationalizing the vision of health sovereignty, emphasizing the need for accessible and resilient health systems that are less reliant on external support. The summit reflects a broader agenda that aims to ensure that 1.4 billion Africans are empowered to take charge of their health governance, ultimately transforming the narrative around African health from one of dependency to one of self-determination and empowerment.
