Strengthening Connections with New Vessels
GNV, the ferry company under the MSC Group, has significantly bolstered its commitment to Morocco by introducing two new vessels, the "GNV Aurora" and "GNV Virgo." These ships will enhance the routes connecting the North African nation with Spain and Italy as part of an ambitious fleet renewal plan valued at €1.3 billion. The formal announcement of this new phase took place on June 1 at the port of Tangier Ville, coinciding with the christening ceremony for the "GNV Aurora," which marks the fourth new-generation ship added to the fleet and the second powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). This event attracted over 500 attendees, including institutional representatives from Morocco and Italy, along with company executives.
The new ferries will operate on routes between Tangier Med, Barcelona, and Genoa. The "GNV Aurora" commenced service on June 1, while the "GNV Virgo" is set to launch its operations on July 1. Barcelona is positioned as a central hub within the network connecting Morocco, Spain, and Italy, while Genoa aims to establish itself as the primary LNG supply port for both vessels.
Strategic Importance and Future Expansion
This investment in Morocco reflects the growing strategic significance of this market for the shipping company. Over nearly two decades of operations in the country, GNV has transported around six million passengers. In 2025 alone, more than 465,000 travelers utilized the company's Moroccan routes, highlighting the increasing importance of this market within GNV's Mediterranean network. The deployment of these new vessels is timed with preparations for the summer campaign of 2026, a peak period for maritime traffic between Europe and North Africa. In addition to passenger transport, the company aims to strengthen trade ties between Italy, Spain, and Morocco through Tangier Med, the main logistics platform in North Africa and a gateway to the African continent.
Pierfrancesco Vago, GNV's Executive Chairman, emphasized the strategic importance of Morocco for the development of Mediterranean connections during the ceremony, while CEO Matteo Catani pointed out that the introduction of the "GNV Aurora" symbolizes the company's commitment to a more efficient and sustainable fleet. Catani also noted that GNV employs approximately 250 people in Morocco, underscoring the country's increasingly central role in the company's growth strategy.
The "GNV Aurora," constructed by the Chinese shipyard Guangzhou Shipyard International, boasts a gross tonnage of 53,000 tons, a length of 218 meters, and the capacity to accommodate over 1,700 passengers and 2,780 linear meters of cargo. Thanks to the use of LNG and various technological enhancements, it can reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 50% per transported unit compared to previous generations, all while meeting the stringent IMO Tier III environmental regulations. The addition of these vessels is part of a broader program that includes the construction of eight new ferries by 2030, reinforcing GNV's growth strategy in the Western Mediterranean.
