GNV Enhances Commitment to Morocco with New LNG Vessels
GNV, the ferry company under the MSC Group, is set to strengthen its operations in Morocco by introducing two new liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered vessels on the Genua-Barcelona-Tanger Med route starting in the summer of 2026. The GNV Aurora will commence operations on June 1, followed closely by the GNV Virgo on July 1. This route, which connects Southern Europe to Morocco, is among the most crucial transport corridors in the Mediterranean, especially during the summer months when passenger and freight traffic surges. In response to this high demand, GNV is strategically expanding its capacity on this vital route.
The naming ceremony for the GNV Aurora will also take place on June 1 in Tanger, underscoring the long-standing relationship between GNV and Morocco. Morocco has been a key market for GNV for many years, catering to both passenger travel and freight transport. The company has been active in the region for over 15 years, viewing its commitment as a long-term partnership with the country, its institutions, and its international community. The connections between Italy, Spain, and Morocco play a central role in GNV's route network.
Modern Ships for Sustainable Travel
With the introduction of these new builds, GNV aims to bolster its capacities on this high-demand route, especially during Operation Marhaba, when many Moroccans living in Europe return to their homeland. The company is focusing on modern, efficient, and more sustainable capacities to meet the increasing demands of both passenger and freight services. The project has been developed in close coordination with the relevant Moroccan authorities and the Tanger Med port, which has established itself as one of the most efficient logistics hubs in the Mediterranean. This initiative is rooted in the long-term collaboration between GNV and Morocco, characterized by continuous technical and institutional exchange.
“The introduction of these two new ships is primarily an investment in passenger service: Our aim is to provide Moroccan citizens in Europe and their families with a travel experience that is more comfortable, reliable, and aligned with their expectations,” stated Matteo Catani, CEO of GNV. “Simultaneously, this expansion highlights Morocco's central role in our strategy. The country is dynamically developing and gaining international significance, especially with the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2030. GNV aims to actively support this trajectory, strengthen connections between both sides of the Mediterranean, and facilitate related trade flows. Furthermore, employing the latest generation of LNG-powered vessels allows us to operate more sustainably while offering a modern, efficient, and competitive service.”
The operational activities in Morocco will be coordinated by Carole Montarsolo, who was appointed General Director of GNV Morocco last October. This appointment emphasizes the company's commitment to solidifying and expanding its presence in the country. She will continue to be supported by long-time partner Mohammed Kabbaj, who plays a pivotal role in managing institutional and commercial relationships, ensuring continuity and stability in the local market.
Both the GNV Aurora and GNV Virgo are among the most environmentally sustainable vessels in the Mediterranean, operating on liquefied natural gas (LNG), which can reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 50 percent per transport unit compared to vessels from the previous generation. The use of LNG represents one of the most tangible and measurable steps in the energy transition of maritime transport. Additionally, the ships will utilize Cold-Ironing technology, allowing them to connect to the onshore power grid while docked, eliminating local emissions entirely.
The GNV Aurora boasts a gross tonnage of approximately 53,000 tons, is 218 meters long, and can accommodate over 1,700 passengers in 426 cabins. There are also up to 2,780 linear meters available for freight transport. The GNV Virgo features similar technical specifications as well as identical capacities and service standards.
By deploying these two new vessels, GNV is strategically reinforcing its presence on one of the key connections between Europe and Morocco, further solidifying its position in this market.
