GNV Strengthens Maritime Commitment to Morocco with Advanced LNG Vessels

GNV Expands Operations Between Morocco and Southern Europe

GNV, a subsidiary of the MSC Group, has solidified its strategic commitment to Morocco by deploying its state-of-the-art vessels, GNV Aurora and GNV Virgo, on routes connecting the North African nation with key ports in Southern Europe. These vessels are set to commence operations on June 1 and July 1, respectively, facilitating transport between Tangier Med, Barcelona, and Genoa. This move underscores GNV's dedication to enhancing maritime connectivity and supporting the growth of passenger traffic in the region.

Innovative Fleet and Sustainable Practices

The GNV Aurora and GNV Virgo are among the most technologically advanced ships in the fleet, powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), which promotes the use of sustainable fuels such as bio-LNG and synthetic LNG. The Port of Barcelona will serve as a crucial transit hub within the network connecting Morocco, Spain, and Italy, while Genoa will act as the primary LNG supply port for these vessels, which will refuel approximately every four to five days. This fleet expansion is a strategic preparation for the summer season of 2026, a peak period for maritime traffic between Europe and North Africa, coinciding with increased travel from Moroccan citizens residing in Europe to their homeland.

In nearly two decades of operations in Morocco, GNV has successfully transported around 6 million passengers, with over 465,000 passengers recorded in 2025 alone on Moroccan routes. This establishes Morocco as a key strategic market for GNV's services. Furthermore, with Morocco set to co-host the FIFA World Cup 2030 alongside Spain and Portugal, the anticipated surge in tourism and demand for mobility between Europe and North Africa is expected to grow significantly.

The GNV Aurora's baptism ceremony took place on June 1 at the Port of Tangier Ville, marking the launch of the second LNG-powered vessel in the company’s fleet, which is part of a new generation of four ships ordered from China's Guangzhou Shipyard International. With a gross tonnage of approximately 53,000 tons, a length of 218 meters, and a maximum speed of 25 knots, the GNV Aurora can accommodate up to 1,700 passengers in 426 cabins and transport up to 2,780 linear meters of cargo. This initiative is part of a fleet renewal plan valued at €1.3 billion, which anticipates the delivery of four additional new vessels every six months starting in 2027.

Utilizing LNG and implementing energy efficiency improvements allows for a reduction in CO₂ emissions by up to 50% per transport unit compared to previous ferry generations. This also results in a significant decrease in nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, and particulate matter. The vessel adheres to the IMO Tier III regulations, one of the most stringent environmental standards at the international level. Onboard solutions include advanced energy efficiency systems, such as heat recovery for power generation, full LED low-energy lighting, inverters to optimize electrical loads for pumps and ventilation, as well as innovative hydrodynamic solutions for the hull, propellers, and rudders designed to reduce consumption and enhance operational efficiency.

The baptism event was attended by over 500 guests, including GNV’s Executive Chairman Pierfrancesco Vago, CEO Matteo Catani, Morocco’s Minister of Transport and Logistics Abdessamad Kayouh, Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts Fatim-Zahra Ammor, and Italian Ambassador to Morocco Pasquale Salzano. Also present were Mohammed Kabbaj, a long-standing GNV partner in Morocco, and Carole Montarsolo, General Director of GNV Morocco.
