GNV Aurora: A New Era in Maritime Transportation
On June 2nd, GNV, a subsidiary of the MSC Group, celebrated the inauguration of its latest vessel, the GNV Aurora, at the port of Tangier, Morocco. This state-of-the-art ship is the second in GNV's fleet to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) and adds to a series of four next-generation ferries. Constructed at the Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) in China, the GNV Aurora exemplifies GNV's commitment to modernizing its fleet with environmentally friendly technologies.
Environmentally Friendly and Efficient
The GNV Aurora is not just a new addition to the fleet; it marks a significant leap forward in GNV's fleet renewal program, combining technological innovation with environmental sustainability and high-quality service. Measuring 218 meters in length and capable of reaching speeds of up to 25 knots, the ferry can accommodate 1,700 passengers across 426 cabins while also offering an impressive freight capacity of 2,780 linear meters. The use of LNG as its primary fuel source, along with significant energy efficiency improvements, allows the GNV Aurora to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 50% per transport unit compared to previous generations of ferries. Additionally, it minimizes nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx), and fine particulate emissions, adhering to the stringent IMO Tier III standards for environmental performance.
GNV's strategic commitment to Morocco is highlighted by the deployment of its two newest and most technologically advanced vessels on routes between Europe and the North African nation. Alongside the GNV Aurora, the GNV Virgo will also serve these routes, reinforcing GNV's dedication to supporting the adoption of transitional fuels like bio-LNG and synthetic LNG. This decision underscores the importance of intra-Mediterranean connections in GNV's growth strategy, as well as the increasing relevance of the North African market in the company's operational framework.
During the inauguration ceremony, GNV reiterated its dedication to enhancing connections with Morocco, having transported approximately 6 million passengers over nearly two decades of operations in the country. In 2025, the company successfully transported over 465,000 passengers on its Moroccan routes, solidifying Morocco's status as a key strategic market within the GNV network. As GNV's General Director Matteo Catani stated, the launch of these two vessels on Moroccan routes exemplifies the company's vision for the future: investing in technologies that merge safety, environmental sustainability, operational efficiency, and travel quality.
The GNV Aurora and GNV Virgo will commence operations on June 1st and July 1st, respectively, connecting the Tanger Med port with Barcelona and Genoa. Barcelona is poised to serve as a transit hub for the entire network linking to Morocco, while Genoa will function as the primary LNG bunkering port for these two vessels. GNV is strengthening its role in facilitating trade between Italy and Morocco through the Tanger Med port, which serves as a critical logistical hub for North Africa and a strategic gateway to the African continent, increasingly vital for businesses and supply chains operating across the Mediterranean.
