Gourmets & Gourmands 2026: A Culinary Journey Awaits

The Countdown Begins for Gourmets & Gourmands 2026

The excitement is palpable as the countdown officially commences for the 17th edition of Gourmets & Gourmands, following a lively media launch held on May 21 at Bee Botanique. Anticipation is high for what promises to be an extraordinary evening filled with culinary artistry, cultural vibrancy, and a strong sense of community when the Southern Cape’s flagship food fundraiser returns to Carpe Diem School on Saturday, July 25. This year's captivating theme, "Moon over Morocco," sets the stage for a sensory celebration that draws inspiration from the rich flavors, vibrant colors, and deep-rooted traditions of North Africa. Guests are encouraged to immerse themselves in the theme by dressing accordingly, ensuring that the venue is transformed into a magical representation of Morocco.

Gourmets & Gourmands is not just another gala evening; it is an annual fundraiser where tables of 11 guests experience a meticulously curated four-course dining adventure, crafted by some of the finest chefs and culinary teams from the Garden Route. Each edition revolves around a specific destination or concept, and this year marks a significant milestone as it is the first time an African nation inspires both the menu and décor. Participating restaurants will showcase their unique interpretations of Moroccan cuisine, blending their signature styles with themed table settings and carefully chosen wines, offering attendees a tantalizing glimpse into the flavors of Morocco.

A Culinary Exploration of Moroccan Flavors

Guests can expect a delightful fusion of Moorish and Mediterranean flavors, with dishes that pay homage to the traditional Moroccan culinary scene, renowned for its fragrant spices, slow-cooked meats, and the delightful mix of sweet-and-savory pairings. During the launch, co-organizer Alewijn Dippenaar provided insights into the culinary inspirations for this year’s theme, highlighting Morocco's status as a gastronomic paradise. He remarked, "Morocco is famous for its rich, aromatic cuisine. Top foods include tagine—slow-cooked with meat, vegetables, and spices—and couscous, while msemen and harira are beloved street-food favorites." Dippenaar emphasized that Moroccan cuisine encapsulates an adventurous journey through African flavors, with dishes ranging from fresh seafood to the indulgent sweet pastilla. He also touched upon Morocco's celebrated mint tea tradition and the colorful medinas, all of which will contribute to the evening’s enchanting atmosphere.

This year's culinary event will feature esteemed participants such as 101 Meade and the Francois Ferreira Academy, with entertainment provided by the Carpe Diem Marimba Band. Chefs and their teams will transform the school quad into a lively series of pop-up kitchens, showcasing the vibrant culinary spirit of the event. Convenor Wern van der Watt introduced the participating chefs and sponsors during the launch, with media partners and loyal supporters present to celebrate the forthcoming edition. Among the returning sponsors are Hartman & Sons, along with El Sole, Blitzdruk, and Root Coffee. Hartman sales executive Dave Redelinghuys expressed gratitude towards the chefs for their unwavering passion and dedication, while also honoring the late Francois Ferreira, the event's founder.

While Gourmets & Gourmands has evolved into one of the premier culinary showcases of the Garden Route, its primary objective remains to raise funds to support the crucial work of Carpe Diem School and its programs for children with special needs.
