Government Performance Criticized by Justice and Development Party in Morocco

In a recent address at a rally held in Bab Doukkala Square in Marrakech to commemorate Labor Day on May 1, 2026, Reda Boukamazi, a member of the General Secretariat of the Justice and Development Party (PJD), expressed strong criticism of the current government's performance, labeling it as "weak and disappointing." Boukamazi emphasized that the government has exacerbated social tensions and has failed to meet the expectations of citizens, particularly in light of the ongoing rise in living costs and the widening social and regional disparities. The event, organized by the National Union of Labor in Morocco, attracted significant participation, featuring a large labor march that traversed the major streets of the city, where powerful slogans reflecting workers' demands were raised in an atmosphere characterized by discipline and excellent organization.

During the festival, multiple speeches were delivered, including remarks from the regional union secretary who also addressed the conditions faced by workers and the socio-economic challenges at hand. In his speech, Boukamazi highlighted that the government formed after the elections of September 8, 2021, has failed to fulfill several of its fundamental commitments, such as reforming pension systems, implementing unemployment compensation, and activating the results of social dialogue, alongside the stalling of social protection initiatives. He pointed out that the government's performance has been marked by poor communication and a lack of proactive measures, which have led to an increase in protests and a loss of trust in institutions. Boukamazi noted the existence of discrepancies in managing several issues, including conflicts of interest and abuse of power, as well as the government's failure to curb the surge in prices.

Furthermore, he criticized what he described as an inequitable distribution of investments and services among various regions, asserting that certain areas receive a disproportionate share of public expenditure while others are marginalized, thereby entrenching regional disparities and undermining the foundations of social stability. In this context, he asserted that social dialogue has not lived up to workers' expectations, characterizing it as superficial due to the lack of tangible outcomes. He also pointed to a governmental trend towards "commodification of social services," which threatens the role of public facilities.

On an international scale, Boukamazi addressed the tense situations worldwide, particularly ongoing conflicts such as the Palestinian issue, condemning the suffering endured by the Palestinian people and reaffirming rejection of all forms of normalization with Israel. Regarding national issues, he praised the developments surrounding the Moroccan Sahara file, considering the adoption of the Moroccan autonomy proposal by the UN Security Council as a reinforcement of Morocco's position and a significant step towards resolving the conflict.

Boukamazi called for enhanced collaboration among political and union actors to advocate for workers' issues, establish social and regional justice, and restore public services. He stressed that the upcoming phase necessitates profound reforms to restore trust in institutions.
