Significant Developments in Casablanca's Railway Infrastructure
One year following the launch of major railway projects in Grand Casablanca on September 24, 2025, substantial progress has been made in transforming the region's transportation landscape. The National Office of Railways (ONCF) has reported tangible advancements in the key components of this initiative, which is backed by an investment of 20 billion dirhams. This program is part of Morocco's national railway transformation plan aimed for completion by 2030, which overall mobilizes a staggering 96 billion dirhams.
The Casablanca railway project encompasses the construction of three state-of-the-art train stations, the establishment of ten new commuter train stations, the renovation of five existing stations, and the development of an extensive 260 kilometers of railway lines. Additionally, the initiative involves the construction or enhancement of 50 engineering structures, two technical centers, five maintenance hubs, and the acquisition of 48 new trains designated for regional and local services.
Key Train Stations Under Construction
The three primary stations under construction include Casablanca-South, Mohammed V Airport, and the Grand Stadium Hassan II, all of which are critical to the railway expansion plan. Construction on these sites has commenced, with each expected to take approximately 24 months to complete. The Casablanca-South station is being designed as a major intermodal transport hub, featuring six platforms and ten tracks, accommodating high-speed trains, intercity services, and local transit. This station will also be integrated with the tram system, high-service buses, local bus networks, and taxi services.
At Mohammed V Airport, the new station will create a seamless connection between rail and air travel. Directly linked to the airport terminal, it will consist of four platforms and seven tracks, facilitating standard services, high-speed connections, and an airport express service. Meanwhile, the Grand Stadium Hassan II station in Benslimane is set to cater to the anticipated surge in passenger traffic during major events, particularly in light of the upcoming 2030 World Cup. This facility will feature two platforms and four tracks for high-speed trains during major events, alongside five platforms and six tracks for local trains.
Furthermore, progress is being made on the ten new commuter train stations, which are strategically located in areas such as Mohammedia Faculties, Zenata Industrial Zone, and Sidi Bernoussi, among others. These stations will be designed with a unified approach to streamline access between urban areas and station facilities, incorporating waiting and sales areas as well as necessary technical and security equipment.
Through these extensive projects, the aim is to bolster the railway network's capacity, enhance connectivity to vital urban and economic hubs, and provide a more efficient rail service that meets the evolving transportation needs of the metropolitan area.
