Greece Endorses Moroccan Autonomy Proposal for Sahara Dispute Resolution
In a significant diplomatic development, Greece has reaffirmed its support for Morocco's proposal for autonomy regarding the contentious Moroccan Sahara region. During a press briefing following a meeting with Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr. Nasser Bourita, Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis highlighted that this proposal represents a "serious and credible contribution to the ongoing United Nations process". He further articulated that it could be regarded as the "most feasible solution" for the definitive resolution of the protracted regional dispute.
Gerapetritis made it clear that Greece, aligning itself with the collective stance of the European Union, fully supports the efforts made by the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy to facilitate negotiations based on the Moroccan autonomy proposal. The objective is to achieve a solution that is fair, enduring, and mutually acceptable to all parties involved. This endorsement comes at a crucial time as Greece serves as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2025–2026 term, where it has welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797.
By expressing this support, Greece not only aligns itself with the international momentum that His Majesty King Mohammed VI has fostered in favor of a definitive resolution to the Sahara conflict but also reinforces the consensus among the 27 member states of the European Union regarding this approach. The Greek foreign minister's statements underscore a growing international recognition of Morocco's autonomy plan as a viable pathway towards lasting peace in the region.
