Strengthening Ties: Guinea-Bissau's Endorsement of Morocco's Stance on Western Sahara
In a significant diplomatic gesture, Guinea-Bissau has reiterated its steadfast support for Morocco's stance concerning Western Sahara, emphasizing the Moroccan autonomy proposal as the most pragmatic and effective pathway towards resolving the protracted territorial dispute that has persisted for decades. This affirmation of support was articulated during a recent meeting in Rabat between Moroccan Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita and his Guinean counterpart, Joao Bernardo Vieira. During the press conference, Vieira described the Moroccan Autonomy Plan as the optimal solution for establishing a credible and realistic resolution to the ongoing regional conflict. He underscored the significance of the historic Resolution 2797, adopted by the UN Security Council in October 2025, which recognizes the Autonomy Plan as the sole viable political solution. This resolution serves as a lasting foundation for achieving a sustainable political settlement regarding the dispute.
Furthermore, the partnership between Bissau and Rabat is built on a mutual commitment to regional and international responsibilities, as Vieira emphasized the shared determination to enhance bilateral relations and strategic partnerships across various sectors. Notably, Guinea-Bissau is among the over 30 nations that have established consulates in Morocco's southern provinces, with its consulate in Dakhla inaugurated in October 2020. This move aligns with the growing international support for Morocco's Autonomy Plan, which has received backing from more than 126 countries globally, marking it as either the most feasible or the sole solution to the Sahara issue.
Recently, nations such as Japan, Canada, Mali, and Madagascar have joined the expanding list of supporters for the Moroccan autonomy initiative, expressing approval of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which affirms the plan's viability as a legitimate framework for conclusively resolving the longstanding territorial conflict.
