Guinea Football Federation Denies Contesting Morocco's AFCON 1976 Victory

Guinea Football Federation Clarifies AFCON 1976 Title Controversy

The Guinea Football Federation has officially stated that it has not filed any legal complaint with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) or the Confederation of African Football (CAF) concerning the results of the 1976 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). This announcement comes in response to recent speculation circulating on social media, suggesting that Guinea intended to challenge the result of its match against Morocco during the tournament. The federation has firmly refuted these claims, emphasizing that they lack any factual basis or official documentation.

Recalling historical events, the Guinea Federation highlighted that the match in question took place on March 14, 1976, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, officiated by Zambian referee Nyirenda Chaiyo, and concluded in a 1-1 draw. Guinea initially took the lead with a goal from Sharif Suleiman in the 33rd minute, before Morocco equalized through Ahmed Makrouh, known as "Baba," in the 86th minute.

Furthermore, the Guinea Football Federation reiterated that the tournament format at the time did not include a final match, as the title was determined through a mini-league involving the qualified teams. Consequently, Morocco finished at the top of the final group, officially claiming the AFCON title, while Guinea secured the second position.

In light of this, the Guinea Federation has expressed its commitment to uphold historical facts and the regulations governing competitions, urging media outlets and followers to ensure accuracy and avoid spreading unverified information that could lead to misunderstandings. The federation concluded its statement by reaffirming its dedication to the principles of sportsmanship and mutual respect, alongside its efforts to promote unity within African football.
