Haykar: Akhannouch's Government is the Worst in Morocco
Abdel-Samad Haykar, the head of the Justice and Development Party (PJD) in the Casablanca Municipal Council, has voiced strong criticism against the current government led by Aziz Akhannouch, branding it as "the worst government Morocco has ever known." Haykar's remarks were made during a press conference following a special session of the Casablanca Municipal Council on June 19, 2026, where he elaborated on his concerns regarding the government's failure to adhere to its own program and its perceived prioritization of personal interests over public service.
Haykar pointed out that the government has not met the ambitious growth targets it promised, particularly in the realm of education, where it aimed to elevate Morocco into the ranks of the top 60 countries. However, the outcomes have remained significantly below those expectations. His statements were underscored by the alarming statistics indicating a decline in economic empowerment for women, which he highlighted had dropped from a target of 30% back to 19%.
Furthermore, Haykar noted a troubling rise in unemployment rates during the current administration, reaching levels not seen since the late 1990s, along with an alarming increase in business bankruptcies. He expressed deep concern regarding the government's management of social welfare programs, accusing it of redirecting funds from essential social safety nets to other initiatives, thereby undermining the intended support for vulnerable populations.
Critiquing the government's approach to social spending, Haykar stated that direct social support has been drastically reduced to just 500 dirhams, leaving many beneficiaries without essential services that they previously relied upon. He emphasized that the dissatisfaction among citizens should translate into a strong voter turnout in the upcoming elections, cautioning that low participation could inadvertently benefit the ruling parties.
As the public's frustration grows, Haykar encourages a collective response at the ballot box, advocating for a "punitive vote" against the current government in light of its disappointing performance. This call to action aims to empower citizens to hold their leaders accountable and to demand better governance that prioritizes the welfare of all Moroccans.
