High-Speed Train Project Drives Water Network Relocation in Marrakech
In a significant move aimed at enhancing the infrastructure for the high-speed train project connecting Kenitra and Marrakech, the final results of the public tender for the relocation of drinking water networks affected by the railway construction have been officially announced. This initiative, overseen by the regional multi-service company Marrakech-Safi, seeks to prepare public facilities to align with this strategic project. The relocation and transformation of the drinking water networks, impacted by the development of the high-speed train corridor, comes with a total cost amounting to 19,080,091.20 dirhams, inclusive of all fees.
This local undertaking forms part of the comprehensive preparations for the extension of the high-speed line (Kenitra-Marrakech), which is progressively advancing towards realization. The massive project not only aims to connect major cities at high speeds but also signifies a profound transformation in Morocco's national railway network.
Alongside infrastructure works, notable progress has been observed in the construction of primary facilities. Four substantial contracts have already been awarded for the construction of new major train stations, with a total disclosed value reaching 2.317 billion dirhams. These include the Hassan II Stadium station awarded to Jet Contractors, the Mohammed V Airport station assigned to a consortium of URBAGEC and SEPARATOR, the Casablanca Sud station awarded to SOGEA Maroc, and the Marrakech Gueliz station entrusted to TGCC.
To ensure the architectural design meets the scale of this national program, a selection of prominent architects has been enlisted, including Omar Tijani, Tarek Oualalou, and Youssef Dariouch, who are overseeing the design and development of the various architectural components of these new stations.
The office previously announced that the new high-speed train line project linking Kenitra and Marrakech is part of an ambitious vision aimed at realizing an unprecedented transformation of the national railway system, with a substantial total investment of 96 billion dirhams allocated for its execution. This includes the establishment of a new high-speed line along the Kenitra-Marrakech axis, with a financial envelope of 53 billion dirhams earmarked for infrastructure and equipment.
The program, which enjoys special royal support, also encompasses the acquisition of 168 trains with an investment of 29 billion dirhams to bolster and modernize the national rail fleet, alongside allocating 14 billion dirhams to maintain the quality of services on the existing network.
