Morocco's Historic Ascent in FIFA Rankings
In a remarkable achievement, Morocco's national football team has temporarily ascended to the 6th position in the FIFA World Rankings, marking the highest ranking in the nation's history. This advancement follows a series of impressive performances, including a crucial draw with Brazil (1-1) during their opening match in the 2026 World Cup. Previously sitting at 7th in the last official ranking published on June 11, the Lions of the Atlas have now surpassed the Portuguese team, which has dropped to 7th place following their own draw against the Democratic Republic of Congo (1-1).
This upward trajectory solidifies Morocco's reputation on the international football stage, especially after their historic semi-final run in the 2022 World Cup held in Qatar. Under the guidance of coach Mohamed Ouahbi, the Moroccan team is increasingly being recognized as a formidable force in global football.
As per the latest live FIFA rankings, Argentina continues to hold the top spot, followed by France, Spain, England, and Brazil. Morocco's rise to the 6th position places them ahead of powerhouse teams such as Portugal, the Netherlands, Germany, and Belgium. Additionally, the Moroccan squad remains the highest-ranked African team, outpacing Senegal, Nigeria, Egypt, and Ivory Coast.
While this ranking is provisional until the next official publication by FIFA on July 20, Morocco aims to solidify their place with a strong performance against Scotland in their upcoming group stage match.
