How Airports in the Region Select Tourist Destinations for Summer Travel

Understanding Airport Destination Selection for Summer Travel

The regional airports are keenly focused on enhancing their appeal to tourists when determining their flight routes. For instance, a recent survey in Béziers revealed that a remarkable 75% of travelers indicated that the airport played a crucial role in their travel decisions. This statistic resonates well with airport authorities, as they strive to attract visitors who contribute significantly to local economies. Among the passengers, British travelers constituted the largest group, with 40% identifying as tourists, and notably, 80% of them were motivated by vacation plans. Even more impressive is that three out of five visitors were first-time travelers to Béziers, highlighting the airport's growing influence on travel decisions.

Isabelle Roumagnou, the interim director of Béziers Cap d'Agde Airport, emphasized the importance of selecting destinations that attract tourists with substantial spending power. She stated, "We prioritize locations that will encourage tourists who contribute positively to the local economy." This insight is supported by Romain Wino, the operations project director at Edeis, the operator managing Nîmes Airport, who outlined two main criteria used for selecting routes. First, the potential for local markets to generate outbound tourist flows, especially towards popular destinations like Morocco, is paramount. Second, the importance of local demand for familial and social connections plays a significant role in the decision-making process.

Popular Destinations and Their Market Robustness

London and Brussels have emerged as two of the most reliable destinations for regional airports, with strong demand in both directions. Wino noted that routes to these cities are prevalent across various airports, including Nîmes, Rodez, Carcassonne, and Béziers, which raises questions about the necessity of overlapping routes within such close proximity. However, the strategic nature of these connections cannot be overlooked. Certain destinations also serve as gateways to international travel, as seen with airports in Amsterdam, Dublin, and Zurich. These hubs facilitate long-haul travel without the need to transfer through major airports like Charles de Gaulle in Paris.

Pascal Bigot, the development director at Montpellier Méditerranée Airport, highlighted Dublin's advantage as it acts as a pre-clearance point for U.S. immigration services, simplifying travel to cities like New York and Boston. This strategic advantage has led to a renewed focus on reestablishing flights to Dublin this summer, a route previously operated by Aer Lingus until 2019. Additionally, Scandinavian destinations such as Stockholm are gaining attention, with low-cost carriers like Norwegian opening new routes.
