Humanitarian Emergency in Ceuta
On July 30, 2026, more than 1,500 migrants reached the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, having arrived from Morocco through illegal means. This alarming influx has prompted local authorities to declare the situation a "severe humanitarian and social emergency." According to reports from the Agence France-Presse, many of the newcomers are young individuals who swam to the shores of Ceuta, while others managed to enter through a border crossing located south of the region, which spans an area of 18.5 square kilometers.
On the Moroccan side, hundreds of individuals, including minors, gathered at the border between the Moroccan city of Fnideq and Ceuta after rumors circulated suggesting that the borders would be open from early Thursday morning. The regional president, Juan Vivas, expressed concerns to local media, stating, "Reception centers are extremely overcrowded, and there is no room for anyone." This situation is reminiscent of the events of 2021, when over 10,000 migrants entered Ceuta from Morocco within a span of just two days, following a relaxation of restrictions by Rabat amid a diplomatic crisis between Morocco and Spain.
