Hyundai Motor and KOICA Collaborate to Enhance Eco-Friendly Transportation in Morocco
On September 22, 2026, Hyundai Motor announced a significant initiative aimed at promoting sustainable transportation in Morocco by supplying the city of Marrakech with 15 eco-friendly "Elec City" electric buses. This project is a collaboration with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), marking a pivotal step in Morocco's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve carbon neutrality.
As a part of this official development assistance project, KOICA will not only provide the 15 electric buses but also include fast-charging devices and other essential equipment. Furthermore, KOICA is committed to offering training programs and technical cooperation to enhance the operational capabilities and maintenance of the electric buses. This initiative is expected to significantly contribute to the Moroccan government's goal of promoting environmentally friendly public transport.
The "Elec City" buses represent the first locally manufactured electric buses from South Korea to be introduced in Morocco. These buses are set to operate in key tourist areas of Marrakech, contributing to the city's efforts to provide sustainable and efficient public transportation solutions.
In a ceremonial event held at Hyundai's production facility in Jeonju, North Jeolla Province, the company celebrated the completion of the first two buses out of the total 15 designated for delivery to Morocco. Following the production and shipping of the remaining buses, Hyundai plans to hold another ceremony in Morocco to celebrate the official handover of all 15 buses in the first quarter of 2027.
Shafiq Rachadi, Morocco's ambassador to South Korea, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its importance for both the environment and the development of public transport infrastructure in Morocco.
