Illuminating Morocco's Maritime Heritage: The 'Cap des Lumières' Exhibition

Rediscovering Morocco's Lighthouses

At first glance, lighthouses seem to blend seamlessly into the Moroccan landscape. Standing guard along the coastlines for over a century, these maritime sentinels quietly oversee the seas, yet they seldom occupy a prominent place in the collective imagination of the public. This intriguing paradox has inspired the talented photographer and author Renata Thieck-Alami, who is currently showcasing her exhibition titled 'Cap des Lumières' at the National Gallery Bab Rouah in Rabat, running until July 11. The opening event, held on June 20, was graced by the presence of Nizar Baraka, the Minister of Equipment and Water, whose attendance underscores the cultural, historical, and symbolic significance of these maritime structures that have played a pivotal role in the development and safety of Morocco's coastline.

A Journey Through Light and History

Spanning nearly a decade of research and travels across the Kingdom, the exhibition features twenty lighthouses out of the thirty-nine that dot Morocco's coastline. From Dakhla to the Strait of Gibraltar, these edifices emerge as silent witnesses to a maritime, cultural, and human history that remains largely unexplored. Through her black and white photographic series entitled 'Paradox', Renata delves into the symbolism of the lighthouse: a monument designed to be seen, to illuminate, and to guide, yet often overlooked in collective memory. Rather than adopting a strictly documentary approach, her selection reflects a personal journey enriched by encounters, discoveries, and emotions. Each lighthouse thus stands out as a landmark imbued with narratives, revealing the historical influences that have shaped Morocco's shoreline.

The exhibition also engages in a dialogue with 'Prisme', a series dedicated to the Port of Casablanca. In contrast to the reassuring stillness of the lighthouses, this series captures the vibrant energy of the port world, characterized by its flows, movements, and diverse trajectories.

Beyond the exhibition, 'Cap des Lumières' also marks the first public presentation of a photographic book currently in progress. Enhanced by the writings of author Driss C. Jaydane, this book aims to provide a unique artistic and philosophical interpretation of the Moroccan lighthouse, regarded as an essential element of cultural heritage and collective memory. Through this project, Renata Thieck-Alami invites viewers to adopt a fresh perspective on these familiar monuments that often escape our notice. She further encourages a reflection on their preservation and enhancement, especially as many countries today are transforming their lighthouses into cultural and educational spaces. This initiative serves as a reminder that heritage is not merely a relic of the past but a living resource that helps us better understand our relationship with the land, history, and the act of transmission.
