In Loving Memory of Virginia Genell Meyer: A Life of Service and Generosity

Virginia Genell Meyer: A Life Well-Lived

Virginia Genell Meyer, born on April 9, 1924, in Chicago, Illinois, passed away peacefully on April 26, 2018, at the age of 94, surrounded by her loving family in Petaluma, California. Her life was characterized by an unwavering commitment to her country, family, and community. At the tender age of 20, Virginia enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps, bravely donning her uniform to serve during the tumultuous times of World War II. Her military journey took her to significant locations such as Casablanca in French Africa, Paris, France, and Oberammergau, Germany. It was during her time at the European Command Intelligence School that she met her future husband, Charles Meyer, a fellow military student. Their marriage lasted for an impressive 48 years until his passing, during which time Charles dedicated 20 years to the Air Force, allowing the family to experience a life filled with travel and adventure.

Virginia's zest for life was evident in the many lessons she imparted to her family. She believed that no matter how full one might feel after a meal, there is always room for dessert, and that the joy derived from savings after a day of bargain shopping outweighs the amount spent. She taught that the value of a gift lies in the thought behind it rather than the presentation, humorously dismissing the time-consuming task of wrapping countless Christmas presents. Despite her busy life, Virginia was always available to support others, whether it was cheering on her grandchildren at sporting events, volunteering in her daughter’s classroom at Valley Vista School, or writing newsletters for the Widows and Widowers group. Her generosity and appreciation for others were hallmarks of her character.

As Virginia neared the end of her life, she expressed her deep gratitude for the compassionate care she received from Hospice, particularly her nurse Divina and aide Elva. The family is also thankful to Kurtchen, who provided care during her later years. One of the family's cherished memories is celebrating Virginia's 94th birthday, where she delighted in two bowls of ice cream topped with whipped cream and cherries, surrounded by her family. Virginia is survived by her daughters, Kurtchen Trezek and Kimberly Jensen, her grandchildren Lacey Farley, Bill Jensen, and Angela Jensen, her great-grandchildren Wyatt and Madeline Jensen and Cassandra Farley, and her brother Richard Slechta. Virginia Genell Meyer will be dearly missed and forever remembered. In accordance with her wishes, there will be no formal service; however, the family encourages those who wish to honor her memory to consider making donations to Hospice or to find a great bargain to donate to someone in need.
