Inauguration of New U.S. Consulate in Morocco: Celebrating 250 Years of Partnership

New U.S. Consulate in Casablanca Celebrates a Historic Alliance

On May 5, 2026, a significant milestone was marked as officials from the United States and Morocco came together to inaugurate the new U.S. Consulate General in Casablanca. This event not only symbolizes the enduring relationship between the two nations but also highlights a partnership that has flourished for an impressive 250 years. The consulate is strategically located in the Casa Anfa financial district, a site that aims to foster expanded cooperation in various sectors, including economic development, security, and regional stability.

The long-standing allyship between the U.S. and Morocco traces back to 1777, when Morocco became the first nation to officially recognize the United States as an independent country. This historical acknowledgment paved the way for centuries of collaboration, including significant military alliances during both World Wars, where Moroccan forces contributed to the Allied efforts. The legacy of this partnership continues to grow, with Morocco receiving "non-NATO ally" status in 2004, which has facilitated priority access to defense materials and joint research initiatives.

Details of the New Consulate

The construction of the new consulate, which comes with a budget of $282 million and includes a $100 million investment from Morocco, represents a robust commitment to the U.S.-Moroccan relationship. Designed by The Miller Hull Partnership and built by BL Harbert International, the consulate is not only a modern facility but also incorporates elements of Moroccan architectural tradition, ensuring it is both functional and culturally reflective. At its peak, over 900 workers contributed to the establishment of this diplomatic site, which includes various amenities such as gardens, contemporary art installations, and enhanced security features.

The U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations (OBO) has emphasized that this new facility serves as a physical testament to the long-term dedication of both countries toward nurturing their relationship. This consulate is anticipated to be a vital hub for diplomatic activities, enhancing the safety and prosperity of both nations as they look forward to another 250 years of collaboration.
