In celebration of Unity Day and the anniversary of the glorious Green March, the University of Cadi Ayyad, in collaboration with the Innovation Hub, the Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah Faculty of Science, and the Faculty of Science and Technology in Marrakech, as well as the Regional Investment Center of the Marrakech-Safi region, is set to host the inaugural edition of the Moroccan Sahara Innovation Challenge 2026. This exciting event, themed "Territorial Domain - Potential - Future," will take place from October 26 to 31, 2026. The initiative aims to enhance the university's engagement with its economic and territorial surroundings while promoting scientific research, innovation, and entrepreneurship as key drivers for harnessing the rich potential of the southern regions of Morocco. The challenge is designed to inspire young talents and skilled individuals to develop innovative solutions and projects that address the unique needs and developmental opportunities of these areas.
Focus Areas and Program Details
The Moroccan Sahara Innovation Challenge will bring together students, researchers, young innovators, startups, and project holders to focus on six critical thematic areas that are vital for the southern regions' development. These areas include the environment, ports, blue economy; water, renewable energies, and the green transition; agriculture, food, and bio-resources; mobility, logistics, connectivity, and smart territories; art, culture, tourism, sports, and territorial experience; as well as entrepreneurship, investment, and new value chains. The program will kick off on October 26, 2026, at the Faculty of Science in Marrakech with an official opening and launch ceremony for the challenge. Following this, participants will benefit from an intensive training and mentorship program at the Innovation Hub on October 27. On October 28, teams will present their projects during the final stage to a jury at the Faculty of Science and Technology in Marrakech. The event will culminate in the city of Laayoune with a closing ceremony and awards presentation scheduled for October 31, 2026, coinciding with Unity Day celebrations.
The challenge offers ten awards, including three major prizes aligned with the IDEA, LAB, and SCALE tracks, along with six thematic awards and a special jury prize for the best project. Beyond merely recognizing winning projects, the initiative will provide promising projects with a year-long support program at the Innovation Hub of the University of Cadi Ayyad in Marrakech. This support will encompass prototype development, guidance in entrepreneurship and intellectual property, market access assistance, and opportunities to connect project holders with local stakeholders and entrepreneurs, facilitating the transition from ideation to scalable and investable solutions.
The inaugural challenge is marked by a collaborative dynamic that brings together various institutional, economic, and territorial actors, including the Chamber of Commerce, Industry, and Services of the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra region, the Chamber of Commerce, Industry, and Services of the Dakhla-Oued Ed-Dahab region, the Business Creation Foundation of the Popular Bank, the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM), Emerging Business Factory, the Social Development Agency, and the Regional Tourism Council of Marrakech-Safi, among others. Through this initiative, the University of Cadi Ayyad aims to strengthen the bridges of collaboration between academia, scientific research, innovation, entrepreneurship, investment, and regional development, creating a space to unite academic talents with economic and institutional actors around projects capable of addressing the challenges and opportunities present in the southern regions of Morocco.
The Moroccan Sahara Innovation Challenge 2026 represents a new university initiative geared towards territorial innovation, aimed at showcasing competencies, valuing the potential of the southern regions, and supporting projects that meet the development challenges and opportunities in these areas. This endeavor will significantly enhance the university's contributions to generating innovative solutions with substantial economic and territorial impact.
