Revolutionizing Water Access Through Fog Harvesting
In an inspiring leap towards sustainability and community welfare, a revolutionary system has emerged in the Moroccan region of Aït Baâmrane, using fog from the Atlantic Ocean to provide potable water to local villages. For years, women and young girls in this arid area faced the grueling daily task of carrying heavy water containers over long distances—often walking under the scorching sun for four hours while balancing over 20 kilograms on their heads. This arduous obligation not only consumed their mornings but also kept many children out of school. Fortunately, this nightmare has come to an end, as large nets installed on Mount Boutmezguida now capture moisture from the air, allowing water to flow directly from household taps.
Located at an elevation of over 1,200 meters in the Anti-Atlas mountain range, these polymer nets, secured with steel posts, effectively trap the dense fog rolling in from the ocean. As the humid air collides with the nets, droplets form and fall into collection tanks, flowing down through a network of over 10 kilometers of pipes purely by gravity—eliminating the need for wells, motors, or heavy machinery to operate the system.
A Historical Innovation Meets Modern Engineering
This innovative method of harvesting water, while gaining traction in various regions, has its roots in 16th-century documents. However, modern engineering has significantly enhanced its efficiency. Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have refined the original design, adjusting the size of the mesh holes and the type of threading used, which has resulted in an impressive 500% increase in water collection. Currently, the installation at Mount Boutmezguida spans 600 square meters of netting, capable of capturing approximately 64 liters of water per square meter in just one day. The system is also equipped with small solar panels to minimize energy consumption and is constructed from simple materials, allowing local residents to easily repair it if any issues arise.
The Moroccan NGO Dar Si Hmad has been advocating since 2006 for the residents of Aït Baâmrane to have reliable access to water in their homes. However, upon achieving this goal, they encountered resistance from the community, as locals were hesitant to trust water that came directly from the clouds without touching the ground. Many, including a local woman named Fadma, were initially skeptical, fearing that this unconventional source would not be suitable for consumption or religious practices. Yet, this skepticism faded when Fadma witnessed her granddaughters being able to attend school instead of spending their days hauling water containers.
With the traditional responsibility of water collection now lifted from them, many women felt a loss of purpose within their families. To ease this transition, the NGO organized literacy classes, enabling them to learn how to read numbers on mobile phone screens—an essential skill for making emergency calls in case of pipe failures. The statistics surrounding this initiative highlight its significance; women across Africa collectively spend 40 billion hours each year obtaining water. The World Health Organization estimates that each individual requires around 75 liters of water daily for a healthy life—now a necessity that is met in these villages.
In recognition of its success, the United Nations awarded the project in 2016, acknowledging it as a model solution for combating climate change and desertification. While the fog nets rely on high mountains and fog to function, they illustrate that simpler solutions exist. In contrast to countries like Saudi Arabia, which invest $7.2 billion in constructing vast desalination plants, these Moroccan villages have ingeniously solved their water scarcity issue by simply “squeezing the clouds.”
