INS Sudarshini's Triumph at Escale à Sète 2026
On April 7, 2026, the Indian Navy’s Sail Training Ship, INS Sudarshini, concluded her participation in the prestigious Escale à Sète festival, one of the largest maritime events in the Mediterranean that celebrates global seafaring traditions. The event brought together numerous international tall ships, allowing INS Sudarshini to engage in a variety of maritime activities, including cultural exchanges, workshops, and sporting events that were integral to the festival's schedule. This vibrant atmosphere not only showcased the ship's capabilities but also fostered camaraderie among maritime nations.
Cultural Exchange and Celebratory Events
A standout moment during the festival was the Indian Naval marching contingent's participation in the Heritage City Parade, commemorating the 400th anniversary of the French Navy. As they marched proudly through the historic streets of Sète, the contingent exhibited exceptional discipline and unity while displaying the Indian tricolour. Their performance was a testament to the strong ceremonial traditions of the Indian Navy. Furthermore, the Sudarshini rowing team achieved notable success by securing a bronze medal at the Jeux Maritimes, underlining the competitive spirit of the crew.
The festival culminated in the Grande Parade de Départ, a ceremonial sail past featuring INS Sudarshini unfurling her sails, which created a stunning visual spectacle for all attendees. During the ship's stay in port, thousands of visitors were welcomed aboard, allowing them to learn more about the vessel's mission and maritime capabilities. This enthusiastic turnout reflected a robust cultural engagement and the strengthening of maritime ties between India and France. Additionally, a joint yoga session held with the crews of FS Étoile and ITS Corsaro exemplified a shared commitment to health and well-being.
Shri Sanjeev Singla, the Ambassador of India to France, hosted an official reception aboard INS Sudarshini, attended by dignitaries and representatives from participating nations. In his address, he highlighted the enduring legacy and increasing cooperation between the Indian and French navies. Following her departure, INS Sudarshini set sail for Casablanca, continuing her mission to enhance maritime relationships under the initiative known as Lokayan 26.
