Morocco Faces a Prolonged Heat Wave
Morocco is currently enduring a significant heat wave that is expected to persist until Monday, with temperatures soaring between 34°C and an alarming 42°C across various regions of the country. This alarming weather pattern has prompted the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) to issue an orange-level alert, indicating serious weather conditions that could impact daily life. The high temperatures are forecasted to span from Thursday through the upcoming Monday, affecting a wide range of areas.
Temperature Forecast and Safety Precautions
From Thursday to Saturday, many inland and northern regions, such as Fez, Meknes, Khemisset, Beni Mellal, Marrakech, Settat, Khouribga, Kenitra, and Larache, will experience temperatures ranging from 36°C to 41°C. Following this, the situation is projected to worsen, with southern and desert areas, including Ouarzazate, Oued Ed-Dahab, Boujdour, Es-Smara, Aousserd, and Tata, seeing temperatures climb even higher, reaching between 39°C and 42°C from Saturday to Monday. Coastal cities will also not be spared from this oppressive heat; places like Agadir, Essaouira, and Safi can expect temperatures between 37°C and 42°C, while major coastal hubs such as Casablanca, Rabat, and Sale are predicted to experience temperatures from 34°C to 38°C.
As the heat intensifies, many residents are adapting by staying indoors during the peak afternoon hours, increasing their water intake, and flocking to the beaches in coastal areas to find some relief from the sweltering conditions. Authorities are strongly advising the public to avoid direct exposure to the sun during the hottest parts of the day and to take essential precautions, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly. As this heat wave continues, remaining vigilant and prioritizing health and safety will be crucial for all Moroccans.
