Intense Heatwave Hits Morocco: Temperatures Soar Above 100°F

Heatwave and High Winds Affect Morocco

Rabat is currently experiencing a severe heatwave accompanied by strong gusts of wind, impacting a significant portion of Morocco this week. According to the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM), temperatures in the southern and southeastern regions are expected to reach extreme levels between 104°F and 111°F. The internal areas of the country will see temperatures ranging from 95°F to 104°F, while coastal regions will benefit from a maritime breeze, maintaining relatively moderate temperatures.

This weather phenomenon is accompanied by a strong windstorm that has disturbed sea conditions, prompting authorities to ban swimming along nearly the entire Atlantic coastline for Tuesday and Wednesday. Beaches in the southern region, including Mirleft, El Ouatia, and Tarfaya, have been issued a black flag, indicating a total prohibition due to extreme danger. Meanwhile, the beaches of Agadir, Essaouira, and Casablanca are under a red flag warning, leaving the northern coast as the only area with yellow flags.

In addition to the heat, authorities anticipate thunderstorms and localized showers in the High Atlas regions, with strong winds potentially lifting dust in the interior and southern areas. Forecasts indicate that high temperatures are poised to rise again in the northern and central regions as the weekend approaches. Morocco has experienced consecutive heatwaves throughout May, marked by orange alerts, and now enters June with similar conditions and active yellow warnings.
