Investigation Launched in Marrakech Over British Tourist Filming Minors

Concerns Arise Over Filming of Minors in Marrakech

The General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) has firmly denied reports suggesting that a 20-year-old British tourist was arrested and detained in Marrakech, labeling these claims as "false and baseless." In a statement issued on Tuesday, the DGSN clarified that while the individual was not in custody, he is currently under judicial investigation for filming and distributing images of individuals, including minors, without their consent, which contravenes Moroccan law.

This investigation was initiated following citizen reports that the tourist was seen recording and sharing videos in the Jemaa el-Fna square. These videos allegedly depicted vulnerable individuals, primarily minors, without proper authorization, under the guise of providing aid. Following the prosecutor's directive, the police opened an investigation and seized the individual’s phone to conduct a forensic examination of its digital content. The DGSN emphasized that the individual has received all legal guarantees throughout the process and has been brought before the court while at liberty, with a hearing scheduled in accordance with national legislation.

This statement was released in response to allegations reported by the Daily Mail, which cited the man's mother. She claimed he had been detained for several hours and was prevented from contacting his family after filming himself distributing supplies to street children.
