Next month, prominent defense companies from Israel, including Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), Elbit Systems, Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, Xtend, and Uvision, will converge at the Marrakech Royal Moroccan Air Force Base for the highly anticipated Marrakech Airshow, scheduled from October 7 to 10. At the Marrakech Airshow, IAI is set to present an extensive portfolio that includes its renowned Barak 8 air-defense system, which was previously supplied to Morocco in a significant $500 million deal. In addition, the company will showcase its OPAL collaborative combat technologies, the precision-strike LORA system, and the Heron MK II unmanned aircraft, which is designed for medium-altitude, long-endurance missions. Moreover, IAI aims to emphasize its commitment to fostering local cooperation through industrial partnerships, knowledge sharing, and technology transfer, thereby contributing to the development of Morocco's defense capabilities.
Morocco's military acquisitions from Israel extend beyond air-defense systems. The nation has expanded its aerial surveillance capabilities through the procurement of unmanned aircraft, including the Hermes 450 and Hermes 900 from Elbit Systems and the Heron 1 from IAI. Furthermore, Morocco has made substantial investments in artillery systems, acquiring 36 ATMOS 2000 self-propelled howitzers from Elbit Systems and multiple PULS rocket launchers in a deal estimated at $150 million, with deliveries anticipated this year.
The most significant development in their bilateral relations is the landmark satellite deal, in which IAI is set to provide Morocco with a state-of-the-art intelligence satellite valued at approximately $1 billion. This agreement, signed in 2024, marks a pivotal step in enhancing Morocco's satellite capabilities, replacing its existing Airbus satellites, Mohammed VI-A and Mohammed VI-B. This transaction, completed in alignment with the Abraham Accords that normalized relations between Israel and Morocco, underscores the two nations' commitment to strengthening defense cooperation across various domains, including intelligence sharing, military training, and logistical support.
