Resumption of Direct Flights Sparks Renewed Interest
Israeli travelers are embarking on journeys to Morocco once again, following the resumption of direct flights between the two nations last month. This marks a significant milestone, as it is the first time in nearly three years that such services have been available. The newly launched route by Arkia Israel Airlines connects Ben Gurion Airport to Marrakech, re-establishing a vital link that had been severed after the tragic Hamas terror attack on October 7, 2023. Growing Demand Amid Travel Advisory
Despite the National Security Council's Level 3 travel advisory for Morocco, which advises caution in various regions, travel agents report a swift increase in demand for trips to the North African country. Currently, Arkia operates two flights weekly, on Mondays and Wednesdays, with Israir and Sun D’Or planning to introduce similar routes soon after the holiday season. However, El Al has yet to announce its flight resumption plans.
Morocco had previously been a favored destination for Israeli tourists before the decline in travel following the October attack. The normalization of diplomatic relations between Morocco and Israel in December 2020, part of the US-brokered Abraham Accords, had opened the door for direct flights, a first in the history of the two nations. Jamal Benkirane, a tour guide in Marrakech, highlighted the rich Jewish heritage in the country, including numerous historical sites, kosher food options, and the presence of Jewish communities that have thrived over the centuries.
The re-establishment of the Arkia route came after extensive discussions between aviation and security officials from both countries, with Transportation Minister Miri Regev participating in the inaugural flight. Organized tours have experienced a surge in popularity, especially among Israelis of Moroccan descent, who number around one million. However, the appeal of Morocco's rich cultural tapestry also extends to Ashkenazi Israelis, who are increasingly interested in exploring the country’s Jewish history and heritage.
Tour operators emphasize the ease of observing Jewish traditions during visits, with a robust infrastructure in place for kosher food and religious services. While the Israeli government has issued a Level 3 advisory for travel to Morocco, which includes recommendations for increased caution, many travel industry professionals believe that popular tourist routes remain safe and manageable.
