Istiqlal Party Unanimously Approves Participation in New Government
The National Council of the Istiqlal Party, a prominent political organization in Morocco, convened on Saturday to reach a unanimous decision endorsing the party's participation in the forthcoming government. This pivotal meeting also authorized the party’s Secretary-General and the Executive Committee to resume discussions with the leadership of the Authenticity and Modernity Party regarding the formation of the new government.
This decisive action by the Istiqlal Parliament was taken during an extraordinary session dedicated to evaluating the party's performance in the recent legislative elections. It also marked a critical moment for the Istiqlal Party, originally founded by Allal El Fassi, as it laid the groundwork for its role in the government led by Fatima Zahra Mansouri.
In his remarks following the announcement, Nizar Baraka, the Secretary-General of the Istiqlal Party, expressed gratitude to the National Council members for their trust in him and the Executive Committee. He emphasized the importance of continuing the party’s journey to meet the aspirations of Moroccan citizens.
Baraka highlighted that the party entered the recent electoral phase with a well-defined electoral program that focused on several urgent commitments. Key among these commitments are the protection of families, safeguarding the country's values, maintaining citizens' purchasing power, combating speculation, and adopting a zero-tolerance approach toward corruption and conflicts of interest. Moreover, he underscored the necessity of enhancing public service quality in education and health sectors.
Furthermore, Baraka pointed out the significant overlaps between the Istiqlal Party's program and that of the Authenticity and Modernity Party, indicating that this alignment should also be a condition for their collaboration.
The Secretary-General noted that the votes cast by citizens, placing the Istiqlal Party third in the elections, make its involvement in the government intricately linked to the execution of these commitments. He stressed the importance of fulfilling these promises to maintain the party's credibility and meet societal expectations.
Internal Organization and Future Elections
Regarding the internal organization of the Istiqlal Party following the recent electoral challenges, Baraka issued a stern warning to party members who violate the party’s legal, organizational, and ethical standards. He declared a firm commitment to enforcing the laws that govern party conduct, affirming that "no one is above the law". He also mentioned that the party would conduct inquiries into any observed practices and would actively monitor the situation to produce accountability reports.
Baraka further articulated the necessity of maintaining discipline within the party, aligning with the resolutions made by party members when establishing its foundational regulations, which included the formation of an ethics and values committee.
Looking ahead, Baraka called for mobilization in preparation for the upcoming local elections scheduled between June and September 2027, as well as for the professional chambers elections. He made it clear that the party leadership would refrain from endorsing candidates for the local elections who did not perform satisfactorily in the recent legislative elections, stating, "We will take into account the results of the 2026 elections when granting endorsements for the 2027 elections. Those who did not deliver will not receive support." The Executive Committee of the Istiqlal Party is set to make the necessary decisions in this regard.
