Concerns Over Illegal Migration from Morocco

In a recent interview with the Italian newspaper "Corriere della Sera," Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani asserted that the challenges associated with illegal migration and security threats in the Spanish city of Ceuta stem primarily from Morocco. Tajani emphasized that Italy is not engaged in any form of conflict with Spain regarding these matters. Instead, he indicated that Italy is conducting thorough checks on incoming migrants to ensure safety. He suggested that Spain should focus more on the situation in Morocco, stating, "Instead of worrying about us, Spain should be concerned about Morocco: the problems originate from there."

Tajani highlighted Italy's prior actions, which included the rejection or detention of unauthorized individuals attempting to enter the country. He explained that border controls are essential for the benefit of all, as they prevent not only illegal migrants but also potential terrorists from infiltrating Europe. The surge of illegal migration from Moroccan shores to Ceuta, which saw over 72,000 individuals attempting to flee, including many minors, has overwhelmed the city's capacity to manage such a massive influx. This situation has drawn sharp criticism towards Moroccan authorities, who are believed to be instrumental in the ongoing crisis, which many view as a tactic of pressure against Spain.
