Italian Socialite Faces Justice for Deadly Revenge
A prominent Italian socialite, Cinzia Dal Pino, has been handed an 18-year prison sentence after being convicted of murder for using her Mercedes SUV to run down a bag thief. This ruling came during a court hearing in Lucca, where the 67-year-old was accompanied by her daughter. The judge informed Dal Pino that she would be allowed to serve her sentence for voluntary homicide at home, as reported by the Italian news outlet L’Unione Sarda.
The case has drawn significant public attention, particularly after surveillance footage surfaced, allegedly showing Dal Pino striking the suspected bag thief, Nourdine Mezgoui, a Moroccan national, in September 2024. Prosecutor Sara Polino argued that Dal Pino acted out of "excessive revenge" and pursued a life sentence, highlighting the severity of the crime. In contrast, Dal Pino's defense team argued that she only intended to reclaim her stolen bag, seeking to have the charges reduced to "negligent excess of self-defense."
Following the sentencing, Dal Pino's attorney, Entico Marzaduri, expressed disappointment over the outcome, stating, "I expected a different outcome, both in terms of the legal classification and the severity of the sentence," and confirmed plans to appeal the decision. Meanwhile, the lawyer representing Mezgoui's family welcomed the ruling, stating it was the outcome they had anticipated. Enrico Carboni noted that while 18 years is a substantial sentence, it reflects the seriousness of the crime, which has raised significant concerns within the community.
Mezgoui's family received support from Gian Marco Romanini, another attorney involved in the case, who praised the prosecutors for their thorough handling of the investigation, stating, "We are reassured by this ruling." The incident occurred in Viareggio, where Dal Pino allegedly ran over Mezgoui after he took her bag. Witnesses reported that she veered her vehicle intentionally towards him while he was walking on the sidewalk. After the collision, she reportedly approached his lifeless body to retrieve her belongings before leaving the scene. Coroners later confirmed that Mezgoui died from critical injuries, including a severe laceration of the abdominal aorta and significant internal bleeding.
Despite claims from Dal Pino's team alleging that she was threatened with a knife during the incident, law enforcement officials did not find a weapon at the scene. Prior to her sentencing, Dal Pino was required to wear an electronic tag, a precautionary measure reflecting the severity of the case.
