Izquierda Unida Advocates for Sahrawi Self-Determination Amid Controversial Policy Shift

Call for Self-Determination of the Sahrawi People

In a significant political move, Izquierda Unida (IU), a coalition government partner in Spain, has publicly demanded the "right to self-determination for the Sahrawi people." This declaration coincides with the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the refugee camp in Tindouf, Algeria. Enrique Santiago, the spokesperson for IU in Congress, made a visit to Tindouf to underscore this important advocacy. Historically, Spain's official stance, aligned with United Nations resolutions, supported a referendum for the Sahrawi people. However, this position has shifted dramatically under Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who, without broad consensus or clear explanation, has chosen to endorse Sahrawi autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty, aligning with Rabat's perspective.

Criticism of Government Policy

As a minority partner in the coalition government, IU has consistently voiced its disapproval of Sánchez's controversial pivot. During his visit to Tindouf, Enrique Santiago urged the international community to take urgent action to facilitate a referendum, asserting that this is the only viable path to ensure that the heroic Sahrawi people can attain the peace they rightfully deserve. In a press release issued by IU, Santiago expressed strong criticism of the position led by Sánchez and defended by the PSOE within the coalition government, marking a clear divide in the approach towards the longstanding conflict in Western Sahara.
