Jamaican Athletes Set to Shine at Diamond League in Morocco

Today marks a significant moment for a cohort of Jamaican athletes as they prepare to make their much-anticipated debut in the Diamond League season at the Meeting International Mohammed VI d’Athletisme de Rabat, which is the third event in this prestigious series. Among the competitors are sprinting sensations Jonielle Smith and Lavanya Williams, along with sprint hurdler Kerrica Hill, all of whom will be showcasing their talents on the global stage for the first time.

Rajindra Campbell, who recently shattered his own national record during a competition in Xiamen, China, is also set to participate. He will be joined by renowned global medallists Bryan Levell, Tina Clayton, and Rushell Clayton, all of whom are eager to make their marks in the competition. Smith and Williams have both impressively lowered their personal bests in the 100m to under 11 seconds this season, while Tina Clayton, who previously competed in the Diamond League in Eugene, is poised to make a strong showing in the women’s 100m race. They will face tough competition from Italy’s World Indoor 60m champion Zaynab Dosso and New Zealand’s Zoe Hobbs, who are expected to challenge the Jamaicans’ bid for victory.

In the men’s 200m, Levell, a bronze medallist from the World Athletics Championships, is gearing up to compete against a formidable field led by World Champion Letsile Tebogo from Botswana. Other notable competitors include South Africa’s Sinesipho Dambile, Canada’s Andre De Grasse, and America’s Kenny Bednarek, all of whom will add considerable depth to the race. Meanwhile, Hill, who clocked a remarkable 12.81 seconds twice at the Miramar Invitational earlier this month, stands as the sole Jamaican representative in the 100m hurdles after her compatriots Dannielle Williams, Ackera Nugent, and Megan Simmonds recently competed in China. Hill will have her work cut out for her as she faces world record holder Tobi Amusan from Nigeria, Bahamian national record holder Devynne Charlton, former world record holder Kendra Harrison, and World Champion Ditaji Kambundji from Switzerland, who is looking to bounce back from two less-than-stellar performances.

Additionally, both Rushell Clayton and Andrenette Knight will be participating in their first 400m hurdles races of the season. Among the primary contenders in this event will be Olympic silver medallist Anna Cockrell from the United States, Canada’s Savannah Sutherland, and Panama’s Gianna Woodruff, all of whom are expected to provide significant competition. Campbell, who is currently in the process of transferring his national allegiance to Turkiye, made headlines last week by throwing an impressive 22.34m in China. He will face off against world leader Leonardo Fabbri from Italy as well as several Americans, including Roger Steen, Jordan Geist, and world record holder Ryan Crouser.

In the women’s high jump, Lamara Distin, who recently cleared 1.94m in China, will be aiming to improve upon that mark as she takes on formidable challengers including Ukrainians Yulia Levchenko and Yaroslava Mahuchikh, in addition to Australia’s Eleanor Patterson. The stage is set for an exhilarating day of athletics that promises to highlight the extraordinary talent of Jamaican athletes on an international platform.
