Japan Endorses Moroccan Autonomy Plan, Strengthening Diplomatic Ties

On May 9, Japan officially welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, which is set to be enacted on October 31, 2025. This pivotal resolution asserts that "a genuine autonomy, under Moroccan sovereignty, could be one of the most feasible solutions" to the ongoing dispute concerning the region. Japan's commitment to this position underscores its intention to engage diplomatically and economically in alignment with the resolution's principles.

This significant stance was articulated in a Joint Communiqué during a video conference between Nasser Bourita, Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, and his Japanese counterpart, Motegi Toshimitsu. This meeting marked a notable occasion, as it commemorated the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Morocco and Japan, set to take place in 2026.

Japan also reiterated its support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy, who are working diligently to facilitate negotiations centered on the Moroccan autonomy plan. The goal is to achieve a just, lasting, and mutually accepted resolution to the dispute. In addition to celebrating the adoption of Resolution 2797, Japan emphasized the importance of engaging all parties in discussions without preconditions, advocating for dialogue rooted in the Moroccan autonomy plan. This approach aims to foster a definitive political solution that is acceptable to all involved, further solidifying Japan's commitment to Moroccan sovereignty and regional stability.
