New York (dpa) - According to reports from 'Bild', a significant meeting took place regarding the vacant position of the German national football team coach. The DFB (German Football Association) executives met with their preferred candidate, Jürgen Klopp, in New York. The renowned coach engaged in discussions on Friday afternoon (local time) with DFB President Bernd Neuendorf and Vice President Hans-Joachim Watzke at a hotel near John F. Kennedy Airport.
Photographs from the venue showcase Klopp alongside his advisor, Marc Kosicke, as well as Neuendorf and Watzke arriving with their luggage. Reports indicate that this pivotal meeting lasted over four hours, reflecting the seriousness of the negotiations.
Klopp is currently serving as an expert for MagentaTV during the FIFA World Cup and has been residing in the United States for several weeks. The DFB leaders traveled from Frankfurt to engage in this crucial dialogue with the former successful coach of Liverpool FC and Borussia Dortmund.
Klopp is considered the ideal candidate to succeed Julian Nagelsmann, who stepped down after Germany's disappointing performance at the World Cup. Given that the 59-year-old has expressed his willingness to take on the role, any outcome other than an agreement would come as a significant surprise and would be difficult to justify to the public.
Since Germany's exit from the World Cup in a penalty shootout against Paraguay in the round of 16, numerous conditions and demands have surfaced, with many now appearing as established facts. Reports suggest that Klopp is seeking a contract extending until the 2030 World Cup, along with a salary that, while reportedly substantial, would only slightly exceed that of his predecessor, Nagelsmann.
Upcoming negotiations with Red Bull regarding the termination of Klopp's contract, which runs until 2029 as Head of Global Soccer, are expected to take place next week. Further discussions with Managing Director Oliver Mintzlaff in New York are anticipated. If the reported details are accurate, Klopp will resign from his position at the beverage company, although he will remain a brand ambassador.
The first international matches for the DFB team following the recent World Cup debacle are scheduled for September and October, where they will begin their Nations League campaign with matches against the Netherlands, Serbia, and two encounters with Greece.
