Jysk's Strategic Expansion in Morocco
In a significant move reflecting its growth ambitions, the Danish furniture retailer Jysk opened its first two stores outside of Europe in Casablanca, Morocco, just a year ago. Recognizing the immense potential within the Moroccan market, Jysk is actively pursuing a robust expansion of its store network. Since the initial openings, the company has already launched a third location and is currently on the lookout for additional sites to establish more outlets. Mikael Nielsen, the Executive Vice President for Retail, Customer Service, and B2B at Jysk, emphasized the positive response received from Moroccan customers, stating, "From day one, we have experienced fantastic feedback from our Moroccan clientele. If I had to summarize our presence in Morocco after the first year in one sentence, I would say: We cannot open new stores quickly enough to meet customer demand."
Looking ahead, Jysk has announced plans to open two new stores this summer, with one set to launch in June in Tangier, located in northern Morocco, and another in July in the capital city of Rabat. Over the next twelve months, the company aims to identify between eight and ten new locations across Morocco, and Nielsen envisions a potential for up to 70 stores within the next five years. The nationwide search for new sites has identified cities such as Fès, Kenitra, El Jadida, Dar Bouazza, and Marrakech as possible candidates for expansion.
Positive Market Reception and Future Prospects
Nielsen remarked on the encouraging reception of Jysk’s initial stores, indicating that the company can accelerate its expansion in this market, as their appealing offerings in sleep and home decor have resonated well with Moroccan consumers. He noted that Morocco is a dynamic and rapidly developing country, and Jysk is committed to growing alongside the overall market. In addition to its ambitions in Morocco, Jysk has also achieved recognition as an employer in Germany, receiving accolades from the Top Employers Institute for the second consecutive year, showcasing its commitment to employee satisfaction and workplace quality.
However, the company is not without its challenges, as evidenced by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, where a Jysk store in Zaporizhzhia was affected by drone strikes and bombings at the beginning of the year. Despite these hurdles, Jysk remains steadfast in its mission to achieve its sustainability goals, with 94% of its suppliers having committed to meeting approved emissions targets by the fiscal year 2028. Furthermore, Jysk is set to establish a new distribution center in Italy by the end of 2027 to support its continued growth in that market. In the last fiscal year, Jysk reported record results both in Germany and globally, highlighting its successful performance and competitive position in the furniture retail sector.
