A man from Kaduna has made serious allegations against the well-known Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, claiming that Gumi has unlawfully interfered in his marriage and is obstructing law enforcement from investigating the purported disappearance of his Moroccan wife. In a revealing interview with RFI Hausa, Nasiru Musa Idris expressed his frustration, stating that his wife has been in Gumi's custody for approximately 11 months. He described the entire situation as profoundly unjust and urged the cleric to comply with a police summons to facilitate a thorough investigation into the matter.
Idris recounted his initial encounter with Gumi at a pharmacy on Isa Kaita Road in Kaduna, where he was accompanied by his family. He subsequently introduced his wife to the cleric, emphasizing that she had no prior connections in Nigeria before he brought her from Morocco specifically to marry her. The marriage was formalized with the full consent of her parents and was supported by documentation from both the Nigerian embassy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to Idris, complications began when Gumi allegedly insisted that he secure an additional marriage certificate from a Sharia Court, despite already having valid documents from Morocco and Nigeria, including a police character report. After Gumi suggested that Idris' wife needed counseling due to her young age, Idris claims he took her to Gumi at the cleric's request. It was at this point that Idris alleges Gumi began to advocate for the dissolution of their marriage while simultaneously obstructing any investigations into her whereabouts by security agencies.
Idris also refuted claims that his wife's mother had traveled to Nigeria and taken her away, asserting that he had personally processed her mother's travel documents to enable the visit. In a response to these serious allegations, Gumi denied any wrongdoing and announced his intention to sue Idris for defamation.
Malam Nasiru Ayuba, known as Dan Agaji and serving as the chairman of the Volunteers of Sultan Bello Mosque in Kaduna, also dismissed the accusations against Gumi. He stated that the Moroccan woman had approached Gumi on her own accord for assistance with a personal issue and that Gumi intervened only after she expressed that she had nowhere else to turn. Ayuba urged Gumi's supporters to remain calm while the situation is being addressed, suggesting that the cleric has been unfairly targeted on social media. He further warned that Idris' private information could be disclosed if necessary.
This incident comes amid broader concerns regarding security in the region, with recent reports highlighting the emergence of new terrorist groups. Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has previously spoken out about the need for effective measures to counter such threats.
