Kast Initiates Security Measures in Northern Chile
On Monday morning, President **José Antonio Kast** arrived in Arica, a city in the Arica and Parinacota Region, to oversee the implementation of the "Border Shield Plan" at the Chacalluta crossing. The construction project officially commenced with the digging of trenches and the erection of walls intended to prevent irregular immigration and enhance border enforcement. Construction and Technological Enhancements
As part of the Border Shield Plan, heavy machinery has already arrived in Chacalluta, with construction slated to begin on Monday and expected to conclude within the early days of Kast's presidency. The project involves creating trenches three meters deep and walls approximately five meters high, focusing on critical areas identified for illegal crossings. According to the Interior Minister, the aim is to cover around 500 kilometers of the border in various segments, with the President tasking the military and the Ministry of Public Works to collaborate on this action plan. The first excavations are set to cover a distance of 600 meters between specific border markers.
In addition to physical barriers, the government is also prioritizing technological advancements for border control. This includes the installation of motion-sensitive fences, drone surveillance, and control towers, alongside an increased presence of police and military personnel. Kast's visit to the northern region of Chile is seen as a pivotal moment early in his administration, showcasing a commitment to addressing the pressing issues of migration and security in the country.
